Introducing Paul Stanton, SAS.

The year is 1985 and down in Bandit County Sean Mullins and his IRA killers have a foolproof plan and the firepower to start a minor war. Dead soldiers and destruction are what they’ve been ordered to deliver and Stanton’s men are the target.

Thus begins a story of betrayal and revenge, set within the murky politics of Anglo-Irish relations of the time. Given an impossible task Stanton embarks on a manhunt that takes him through the killing grounds of Ulster and into the South of Ireland. Finally, in the dark Goth underworld of Berlin’s Wall Zone, he delivers the Return his Government, his men and his honour demand.

Bernard Cornwell says of The Return "A novel of brutal authenticity, unflinching realism and compelling story-telling. An enormously impressive debut and I look forward to more of Paul Stanton’s exploits!"

"Intelligent, emotive and entertaining." Matt Lynn, author of the Shadow Force novels.

"The Return is a gripping read in the best tradition of the military thriller…a heart-stopping story of bravery and betrayal." Patrick Mercer, author of the Anthony Morgan trilogy.

“…a rattling good yarn…heartily recommend it as a good read.” Reviews from the Army Rumour Service (ARRSE) book reviews.

“We are promised two more novels about Stanton…and I will buy them the moment they're out… They'll be my guilty secret.” Reviews from the Army Rumour Service (ARRSE) book reviews.

This is a fantastic read which just kind of sucks you in. Set largely in Northern Ireland and Berlin, an IRA attrocity and corruption are tackled head on by former SAS soldier Paul Stanton who as an undercover operative, indulges in a deniable quest for justice. The descriptions of a Northern Ireland winter are enough to make you cold to the bone. I understand there are plans for more Stanton books; personally I can't wait.
Chris Darnell's first novel, set in Northern Ireland, is a must for anyone who lived, worked or served in the Province during the "Troubles". This well written book will bring back memories to anyone who experienced the this sad period in Ulster's and UK's history. It will be of particular interest to members of the British Army who served in the Province; the tension, the cold, rain and grey of a Northern Ireland winter are perfectly portrayed. Particularly evocative is the smell of war, from aviation fuel to damp webbing and equipment. Darnell spins a believable but intriging tale which leads the reader on in search of the final conclusions. His descriptive writing is among the best I have experienced, whilst his characters are fully formed. I suspect that there is more than a little personal experience here but it is well controlled and does not intrude on the narrative. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a story that contains a twist. It is a must for both the older and younger soldier. Iraq and Afghanistan it is not, Britain's deeper and closer history it certainly is.
A cracking yarn. Good charctors.Keep them coming Chris
